Nokia E52

The Nokia E52 (type RM-469, codenamed Stella) and Nokia E55 (type RM-482) are business-oriented S60 candybar smartphones, part of Nokia's Eseries lineup. The E55 was announced on 16 February 2009 at that year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, while the E52 was announced later on 6 May. Both phones became available in August of the same year.

Being 9.9 mm thick, the E52 and E55 were a relatively thin phones at the time, with mostly metallic design. Both phones share the same specifications but with a major difference: The E55 has a 20-key "half-QWERTY" keyboard similar to BlackBerry's SureType design used on the Pearl series, being the only Nokia phone to use such layout, while the E52 has a traditional 12-key T9 keypad. The E55 also has larger user storage and shipped with a 2 GB microSD card, whereas the E52 shipped with a 1 GB card.

The E52 was available in most markets, coming in Metal Grey Aluminium, Golden Aluminium, Graphite Grey, and Black, while the E55's availability was more limited (mostly in Europe), likely to avoid having to implement a complex layout for non-Latin scripts on what would be a one-off experiment, coming in Black Aluminium, White Aluminium, and Red colors.

Issues

  • The display is not sealed properly, so dust and other small particles can easily gather below the screen lens. The same has been reported with the E72.
  • There have been numerous reports of E52s not turning on, only vibrating when holding the power button. This is suspected to be a CPU related issue.

Variants

  • E52-2 (RM-481): Variant of E52 with different 3G bands for the American market.
  • E55-2 (RM-483): Variant of E55 with different 3G bands for the American market, but appears to be cancelled as it was never certified by the FCC, and no firmwares for it are publicly available.
