The Ericsson A2618 (codenamed Michelle) is an entry-level GSM candybar phone announced on February 24, 2000 and released in mid 2000.

As an A-series device, the A2618 was intended as a fun and affordable mass-market phone with customization features like exchangeable Snap-on covers, custom startup screens, and a ringtone composer.

It was one of their first phones with WAP mobile internet support, others being the business class R320 and R380. Other features of this phone include voice dialing and built-in games, both common features of Ericsson phones at the time.

Issues

Common complaints of this model were the slow menu interface, the keypad which would stop working over time, and the battery life.[1] The keypad problem can be (at least temporarily) mitigated by disassembling the phone and cleaning the button contacts on the PCB.

Variants

  • A2618s: Base model. The 's' indicates dual-band support.
    • A2618sc: Chinese variant.
  • A2628s (codenamed Michelle 2): Improved version with WAP 1.1 support, announced on December 5, 2000 and released in early 2001. The A2628 uses data calls for WAP while its base model uses an SMS based connection, which was slower and not available in all regions.[2]
    • A2628sc: Chinese variant of the A2628.
